We have those too but the worst are the flying ants. We have at least one invasion every year and just have to spray. You can get very effective barrier sprays but it depends on how you feel about all these chemicals in your house.

Lime wash over the lot!

I've found two in our bedroom the past two nights. Three floors up! Just those two, couldn't find any more...thankfully!

As DD is paranoid about ants, and freaks out whenever she sees one, I do spray around all the doors and windows with the Ant and Crawling Insect Gun as soon as we see the first troops. It kills those that it hits and stops others coming in. It's a ready made spray, in a red container. Usually available at DIY stores and garden centres here, not sure if you can get it in France though.

Find out where they are getting in and block it.

Ants outside can be easily dealt with a few kettles of water.

Thanks for the advice folks I will give it ALL a try. Even found them in the first floor bathroom after the toothpaste. At least they won't suffer from rotten teeth!!

Feed them with dry polenta. Apparently it does work!!

I found an ant nest in one of my indoor pot plants the other day :yeuk: as some of my facebook friends know , after dealing with the plant in question (ie putting it carefully in its entirety, pot, saucer et al, into a plastic bag and tipping it all out in the back garden) I bleached the area, sprayed with Defest, and finally vacuumed. There were still a few random crawlers coming back until late evening, and I kept squirting Defest around. But they seem to have gone now. I couldnt see anywhere they may be coming in, but a general spray around the floors seems to have fixed the issue.

I used to use Defest every year when I had the dog to keep the fleas away, but since she died I havent bothered, but I think I will do it annually from now on. I never used to have any problem with creepy crawlies in the house apart from some spiders, which I dont mind.

I have tried uncooked rice before, its a bit slow though, their body temperature never reaches a rolling boil.

I had them under the patio slabs last year found plumbers drain cleaner poured into the hole works really well. Cleans the slabs at the same time.LOL

When we are in Spain, they come onto the roofed patio after dropped crumbs (it's our dining area), we tend to watch them struggle with the floor-tiles (an ant can carry a remarkable amount, but NOT up from the grouting onto a glossy tile). They seem to live underneath the patio, and climb up the edges. Only once had any venture indoors, and we used the fly-spray on the bit of floor they were travelling over. Never came back again.

Can I ask if anyone has ants in their greenhouse & if they are a danger to seedlings, etc?

I've seen so many ants in my greenhouse & they are literally everywhere, even in the soil of my hanging basket which looks like it will have to go out prematurely to brave the ever changing weather.
