  • annoying black flies

Sounds like fruit flies. Check your compost caddy, if you have one, racks of veg (you may have a rotter in there!) , fruit bowl and even your bin if you've thrown something fruity away from a plate or something. Oh and also herb pots on windowsills. Mine like to breed (get me, I've a bloody fly farmer!) in the basil pot and also the spider-plant pot.

Rainbow, I have the same thing at the moment - tiny flee type creatures. They appear to lurking on top of the compost in the chilli and pepper plants I took in from the greenhouse last week. Anyone know how best to get rid of our little pests?

update: Just Googled - do they sound like Fungus Gnats?

Definitely sounds like fruit flies - harmless but really annoying (specially when they land in your drink). Make sure no fruit or veg standing in your kitchen. Try hanging lavender which is supposed to keep all sorts of flies out.

me too! Definitely fruit flies and very very annoying. I opened the wormery the other day and a whole swarm flew out! Must have been ideal breeding conditions for them this year as I'm sure they weren't this bad last year

Mine are all over the cherry toms I'm still picking and ripening indoors-(when will that darn dehydrator arrive?) - they go after the ones that have split. Definitely after either compost or fruit of some sort.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?
