  • Allotment One Year Old

One year ago today I took on my allotment, a half plot, it was not overgrown as the person who had it before had moved away, so only needed lots of weeding, OH and I spent a couple of weekends working on it but as it was my project he has more or less left me to it helping only when asked.
After about a month or so we bought a shed it is my haven.
Have I enjoyed it ? You bet I have and yes sometimes I think what the hell am I doing here and other times I think this is lovely.
I have had success'es and failure's like everyone, will I carry on definatly YES.
I started off growing onions, shallots, garlic and broadbeans overwinter, and they all did very well, the problem was I didn't plant enough, thinking I needed to keep space for lots of other stuff, now I know that when things have finished it leaves space for something else. I also planted lots of herbs.
I was given 15 strawberry plants which have been good and this year have prduced lots of runners which I have potted ready to plant when they have rooted and blackcurrant which were just sticks of nothing I planted them and all seven took and I had a few blackcurrants.
Raspberry, loganberry and rhubarb were already there.
I planted spring cabbage but didnt net them and they were eaten by the pigeons something I wasnt prepared for, this was my second batch of plants as the first didnt make it into the ground as my sister was dying and she was more important than a few plants, so the third lot was planted and covered with netting and hey presto cabbages.
I have also had runner beans, sweetcorn, beetroot, red cabbage and white cabbage, all did well.
Peas, sugarsnap peas, potato's calabrese, not so good didnt plant enough.
First lot of carrots were lost due to letting the weeds grow and pulled up carrots along with them.
At the moment I still have beetroot, carrots, parsnip, swede, and runnerbeans in the ground.
I have started to move my strawberries purley because I am making the bed bigger. I have planted spring cabbage and netted it.
I am so looking forward to another year because I have learnt by my mistakes and I would say to anyone thinking about it or have just started dont worry too much let nature take its course there is so much to learn, I wish I had been older when my dad was alive as he was a very keen gardener and would have taught me a lot but it must be in my genes.
I feel this has been a successful first year and am itching to get out there and do it all again.
Thanks to everyone on here who has given advice to me and others, I read a lot of your comments even if I dont reply.

    Jackie J,

What a brill story, so sorry about your sister though,

This is My first year with an allotment, well it is actually my first week as was given it last week, similar mine has been dug over with no weeds so it is like a blank canvas.

I just cant wait to get going, I am going to start off with some overwintering onion's which I have ordered, so I hope they go well.

Anyway I think I will have a lot of fun over teh next year can't wait.

Jackie J, You have done really well in your first year - sounds like more successes than not. I'm coming up to my second anniversary with my plot and it feels like home from home. I think I'll always keep wanting to learn and do a bit better than the last year!
Like you I read a lot of posts, and though I don't post much myself I have appreciated all the advice and tips from everyone.

I have just accepted a plot and have exactly the same thoughts about my Dad. I remember days on his allotment as a child and so wish he was still alive so that I could ask his advice.
I have been offered a free shed, and once it is up, the first thing I will do is hang up a photo of my Dad.
I am not a religious person, but I know he will be there watching over me and having the odd chuckle at my expense.

I like the Idea of putting up a photo of dad in my case it will have to be mum and dad as I only have photo's of them together. ( long story. )
