Default YUK , catterpillers on my cherry tree.

I went out to look at my cherry tree last night and there were 5 large yellow and black catterpillers on it. Theyy had go faster spoilers on the top , ( couldnt see if it was at the back or front ). I pulled them off and killed them and sprayed the tree. I have also now put a glue band round to stop anything climbing up it. They weren't on the leaves , but were sitting on the branches, Anyone know what they were please. They were about 1 1/4 inches long.
