  • Goosegog shoots

My goosgogs that I bought and planted last year are throwing up shoots from down under. I need to cut them off to keep the goblet shape so can I do it now and will they root as cuttings ?

I would be tempted to leave them until the winter to prune anything off, but of course then you would not be able to try and grow new from the cuttings. I have tried layering my goosegog shoots, bend them over and peg them into a pot of soil, keep it moist and they soon grow roots at the point where the shoot is in contact with the soil. I don't know if all varieties do this, mine is a Hinimaki Yellow and responded very well.

For me, summer pruning is sensible. Make a slot in the soil made with a spade, stick in your Gooseberry cuttings. Left till next year they should root easily.

I'm a "cut it off anytime and stick it in the ground" kind of girl! Fruit bush cuttings seem to gallop away whenever you do them.

I'm forever shoving odd broken off bits and prunings into the ground. I can't move for currants and jostaberries

A nice complaint to have I'm looking at doing some gorilla gardening on some waste land near where I live. If I can get the hang of cuttings and dividing rhubarb etc might have a little wild fruit patch going in a couple of years. Some for the wildlife, some for me

If you have plenty of cuttings, stick them in the waste land now, they'll be less obvious when small! You can say they must have grown from seeds dropped by the birds

i m with veggiechicken on this ,i take out the unwanted shoots/offsets in the autumn and shove them into a spare spot of ground,i bought 2 tiny bushes about 6/7 years ago and now have 9 and i gave away over 20 plants in the last 2 years,i just cant bung them into the bin,so i end up giving all the rooted trimmings away now,or do a swap for something else..
