Default Birds and Gooseberries

Does anyone know if birds eat gooseberries?

My new plant has recently been visited by sawfly caterpillars, think I'm on top of them now, although most of plant has lost its leaves. I am thinking of removing plant from fruit cage out into the open so birds can help in keeping us free of caterpillars but don't want to do that if they will eat my fruit as well.

They don't do with our gooseberries. When we took over our second plot it had a row of gooseberries and redcurrants planted alternately. The birds had every single redcurrant but didnot touch the gooseberries. There are green and red gooseberries and if it is the colour they go for the red gooseberries were not eaten.
