  • Bareroot query.

So, I've some vouchers to use before June or July or something like that - I quite fancy a couple of bareroot fruit trees from the place that the vouchers are for. I'm not ready for them yet, and won't be really until late summer I guess..

It's a peach and apricot - I'll be fan training them on a trellis panel when it's installed. could I order the trees, and just bang them in a pot for now, or would it be more beneficial to heel them in - I'm just wondering if it'll be too long, I mean I could plant them, but they'd probably need to be moved - I'm planning on getting a digger dropped over the wall into my garden to scrape everything out, pots would be easier to move. I could buy a couple of large pots, to help with the issue of them drying out - just not sure which method would be best so thought I'd throw it out there!

I bunged all mine into pots [the aldi ones] and installed 5 into final positions that winter, and most fruited.

Just don't let them drown or dry out.

Alternatively you could order them during the non-bare root season (ie early summer before your vouchers run out) and they should be delivered next winter, by which time you should be ready. If it's a decent supplier then they won't deliver at the wrong time - if it's one of the more general commercial suppliers then I'd be a bit more iffy about this option as they may well send out bare root at any time of year.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

If you won't be ready until late summer, it may be better to order now but wait and get them delivered in the autumn. I think that will give a better result than potting them now and replanting later on.
