Anyone used one of these? I've got a large area of nettles and I'm told I would find it better than strimming. Any hints on technique would be useful.

I'm definitely no expert but did use one once to clear a ditch of nettles. I found that if you stand side on to the plants, and keep the scythe at between hip and armpit height, use the twist of your torso to bring it round with a fair bit of force but not requiring much muscle. Clear the loose bits regularly or you can get into a bit of a tangle.

    I found it quite enjoyable!

I agree! Some time ago I had a go at scything some long grass for hay! Once you get into a rythme, and as long as you keep the blade sharp, it is quite enjoyable and not as tiring as it looks!

I suppose the knack with nettles is just to cut a few at a time as they will fall forward and on to your hands!

Thanks. I've cleared a lot now. Got in a tangle first go but as you said once I got the rhythm it is fairly easy. I'll have to go and sharpen it now.

Hi, thought I'd revive this thread to ask if anyone knows where I can buy a scythe? I'd rather see it 1st so wanted to get one from a shop rather than the internet. I haven't found one in any of the garden centres I've looked in though.

Thanks, I think I've located one at a local agricultural supplies shop - will be going tomorrow to get it.
