Default Allotment Act 1908-1950 10 rod beds

Hi all, Our Parish Council are dragging their feet about providing more land for potential tenants. At a recent meeting I gave a question about sizes of allotments and that Legislation states that 10 rods is the allotment size that a tenant can grow enough fruit and veg to feed a family of four for one year.

1. Am I correct.

2. Where can I find it and can I get a link to it.

I have searched the Allotment Acts, but fail to find the paragraph that mentions the sizes.
Can anyone help.

I found this - doesn't mention rods but poles; so you'll need a conversion...

Allotment Act 1922

22 Interpretation

(1)For the purposes of this Act, where the context permits—

The expression “allotment garden” means an allotment not exceeding forty poles in extent which is wholly or mainly cultivated by the occupier for the production of vegetable or fruit crops for consumption by himself or his family;

A rod is the same as a pole and is 5.25 yards thus squared 30.25 square yards.

if there are 10 rods to the plot therefore it is 302.5 sq yds ...16 to the acre or 15 in practice allowing for paths.

You need 6 taxpayers to demand allotment provision.

I am not sure that it ever did say '10 rods' anywhere? but it is definately the standard and Andrea is right but this i think stops peole holding more than 4...ie market garden/small farm at authorities expense.

If you scroll down a few days Bubblewrap put an excellent link to NSALG law section which in turn will link you to the freedom of info site and a dull old read!

Unfortunately there is no time constraint to supply said plots. Oh, they have a legal obligation to provide them, but not one that says when,
