  • Tales From The Potting Shed - Winter

Newbie posting here so plenty to go wrong probably, but enthusiastic all the same. We obtained our allotment last year at the back end after the old timer sadly passed away. It's a half plot but sizeable enough and we are still working on our Winter digging. I have planted Summer and Autumn Raspberry canes so far, which we have staked and wired. I have also pruned the old canes down the short side, which we inherited. So far I have planted a loganberry, rhubarb crowns and a Japanese Wineberry. We have a whitecurrant and blackcurrant waiting to go in. More digging needed on beds 3-6, although beds 1 and 2 are dug, manured and tarped. Mr VVG has made me static raised beds, three on each side of the middle divider path. We have also placed a standing order for horse poo (well rotted and ripe as you like) from the neighbouring farm where daughter rides. Have volunteered her services for mucking out in return for as much manure as the Merc can carry (Mr VVG does not know this...shhh)! The greenhouse is still too cold even with a heater but have sown Broad Beans, red and white onions, also leeks all showing through. Potatoes chitting (hopefully) in donated egg trays on dining table as greenhouse is full! With regards to seed planning, I have already decided on the beds for the allotment, rotating from last year's plan. All this is still so new to me, so I hope I am doing this correctly. Anyhow, I digress, my sowing plan I think will look something like this:
    January 2011
Plant Rhubarb! Sow white onion Sturon, red onion Karmen, Leeks Musselborough, Radish Cherrybelle, Broad Beans Aqualdulce and Sutton Dwarf. I have already done all of these along with some Sweet Peas. Last year I ended up with a very successful germination rate and a greenhouse full of tomato plants - you just couldn't move in there. My very cheeky neighbour suggested we would be eating Tomato Soup all year and he wasn't far wrong. This year he has seen my seed potatoes along the bench and asked me if I have Irish in me. Maybe I need to get some curtains up!!! Anyhow, this year I intend toget a more staggered approach to planting, harvesting and eating.
February 2011-Sow Peas Kelvedon Wonder, Meteor and Onward (in guttering), Brussels Sprout, Sweet Pepper Mixed, Sweet Pepper Chocolate, Cauliflower ATYR. Shallot sets and garlic in.
March 2011-Now this is when my greenhouse and windowsills will really start to explode.
Parsnip Tender and True (direct), Turnip Snowball, Cucumber Marketmore and Beth Alpha, Gherkin Hokus and Cornichon de Paris, Tomato Marmande, Sweet Baby, Yellow Stuffer, Gardeners Delight, Roma, Garden Pearl, Beetroot Boltardy and Choggia, Lettuce All the Year Round, Carrot Nantes, Broccoli Romanesco and Green Calabrese! Asparagus Crowns and Onion sets in. Potatoes - Arran Pilot, Duke of York, Charlotte, Pentland Javelin, Maris Peer, Desiree and King Edwards.
April 2011-Sow Runner Bean Scarlet Emperor, Turnip Golden Ball, Squash Butternut, Rocket, Lambs Lettuce, Melon, Sweetcorn, Celeriac, Cabbage, Cauli.
May 2001-Sow more Beetroot, more Sweetcorn, more Lettuce, Courgette Black Beauty. That is as far as I have got for now, am exhausted just writing it to be honest.
