  • Planting Onions & Garlic, Pest Battles & Apple Harvests

Some gardening days don’t start smoothly and this one began with a crash as the whole box of onions and garlic bulbs hit the ground. But after a laugh (and a quick pick-up), the planting went ahead as planned. Autumn is the ideal time to get both onions and garlic in the soil, giving them a head start before winter and strong growth in spring.

This year, they’ve gone in alongside rainbow Swiss chard and kale. Interplanting like this makes the most of every inch of space, ensuring beds stay productive with both fast-growing greens and slower, long-term crops.

Of course, gardening isn’t without its challenges. After being away for two weeks, the brassicas were crawling with mites. The first line of defence was a strong jet of water, followed by a spray of neem oil to help bring them back under control. It’s a reminder that pests move fast when you’re not watching.

To end on a sweeter note, apple picking rounded out the day. Using a Wolf Garten extender made it easy to reach the ripest fruit at the very top of the tree, the ones always just out of reach. The reward was a basket of crisp, fresh apples to mark the season.
