Earlier in the month, attention turned to sweetcorn pollination. Hand-pollinating may feel like a delicate task, but ensuring pollen from tassels reaches the silks is the best way to achieve cobs filled with golden, plump kernels. A small effort now makes the difference between half-empty cobs and a full, satisfying harvest. Alongside this, autumn vegetables were planted out which is a vital step to keep the growing calendar rolling into the cooler months. By giving these crops a head start while the soil is still warm, they’ll establish strong roots for autumn and winter growth.
Tomatoes continue to deliver their late-summer rewards, with different varieties ripening at their own pace. San Marzano’s are ideal for rich sauces, Tigerella bring a striking look with their stripes and tangy bite, while Sun Gold deliver bursts of sweetness that never last long on the vine. Each variety has its quirks, making the harvest both diverse and exciting.
Meanwhile, the grapevines are the real test of patience. Pinot Noir clusters tempt with rich colour, but deciding when to pick is never simple. Go too early and you lose depth; leave it too long and you risk spoilage. That judgement call is part of the art of grape growing, and as this is my first season so everything is new. Grapevine management has meant thinning clusters to focus the plant’s energy. It may seem counterintuitive, but by reducing the number of bunches, the remaining grapes ripen with better sweetness, flavour, and quality which is exactly what’s needed for winemaking…..or so I have been told.
This week has also brought sweetcorn to the table, quite literally. Testing cobs for readiness is simple, just look for swollen kernels and a milky sap when pierced. That’s the perfect moment to harvest for the sweetest, juiciest corn possible.
As August edges into September, the greenhouse settles into a satisfying balance: harvests in full swing, autumn vegetables taking root, and careful steps ensuring the grapes finish well. This cycle of “pollinate, plant, harvest, thin, repeat” helps keeps the space productive and endlessly rewarding.
