  • What I Have Done So Far...Part 4... The Conclusion

So part 4 of bringing you up to date with progress thus far.

I got some cheap terracotta pots from Homebase recently which I have filled with soil and will plant some salad stuffs at home on the patio to free up some space up the allotment for large crops.

I got my allotment early sumer last year so everything was started a bit late, and thus got some crops but not a full harvest. I am really looking forward to this year,as I will have the full spring, summer and autumn to do my best.

I decided quite early on after getting my allotment to build raised beds. So over the winter months, I have built a load of them. They are not particularily high, only 10cm, by are all 4ftx4ft apart from the fruit beds which are 8ftx4ft. Each bed cost around £4-5 to build, so not bad.

The idea I am working on is to have a bed for each crop, with a few mixed in. For example, instead of have one bed for carrots and one for spring onions, I am going to have two mixed beds. The reason is so that the onion and carrot fly get confused and leve me alone (well not me, but my food).

Towards the end of last years summer (if you can call it that) I build a fruit cage for my strawberries. The cage is about 2.5ft high and 4ftx8ft. The long sides both open to enable access to the strawberries.

I planted Raspberries a few weeks back in their own bed. They are domant sticks, so I can't wait to see some green growth on them. I got three varieties to give a long fruiting season.

The soil on my allotment is very heavy, so each time I am doing anything, I am trying to improve the soil. Mostly I have dug in well rotted horse manure (free from a local stables god love them) and compost. I have got loads from Wickes when they are on offer, which they are this week. Guess where I'm going after work tomorrow.

I think that brings you up to date. Getting really itchy feet and really want to get more done, but the weather is just so bad at moment. Evenings at the allotment are out of the question as it is far too dark and there is only so much I can do at home once my geenhosue is full.

As you might have guessed I have been really keen to do something this weekend hense four blog posts in one day, but I got to do something other than annoy my OH.
