The Existing Site - The Lower Garden

The garden is a narrow, north facing strip that runs very steeply uphill away from the house.

As you look up the garden, it is divided into two terraces by a high retaining wall.

The lower part is 'L' shaped and completely paved with modern pink paviors (yuk!). I have already divided this into two areas, trellissing off the narrower area that runs along the side of the house from the more or less square patio bit which extends from the end of the house to the retaining wall.

I have also already put in some trellis on the top of the left side of the retaining wall as far as the steps, to create a sense of 'seclusion' on the lower patio. I still need to put trellis across the right side and the intention is to put an arch in the gap over the steps....

This 'patio' area is edged with brick built raised beds, although the beds on the left are really too narrow to be of much use.

We have also already built a barbeque into an niche where the left party wall joins our house This niche was created by the weird way that the previous owner decided to build the party wall and is also responsible for the two absurdly narrow raised beds ( but more on that later!).

There are steps set between the retaining wall and the raised beds built against the right party wall, giving access to the top terrace. There are three beds on this side, which are tiered, the height increasing toward the retaining wall.

There was nothing growing in any of these raised beds when we moved in and we found out why later that year, when they all filled up like ponds with the autumn rainfall!!
