3 Top Reasons to Grow Fruit and Veg in Raised Beds

By Sian Bunney
10th February 2017

The EverEdge EasyBed raised bed system is a great way of growing a wide selection of plants, and is especially popular for cultivating fruits and vegetables. The structures need to be constructed and maintained properly, just like any area of your garden, but they do offer a number of advantages when compared to growing on the flat ground.

1. By raising the level of the soil, drainage is improved and plants are protected from over-irrigation, although additional watering may be required in the driest of months. As a result of decent drainage, the soil inside the raised bed is warmer, so planting can begin earlier in the spring.

2. The EverEdge EasyBed is a modular system which allows gardeners to create structures in a variety of shapes and sizes. It is, of course, important when choosing the design to ensure ease of access to all parts of the bed. By containing a planting area a grower should be able to avoid stepping on and compressing the soil where the edibles are developing.

3. Possibly the main benefit of using a raised bed is that gardeners can choose exactly what to fill their structures with. This means that even in areas where the state of the ground is particularly bad, adding some top soil enriched with fertiliser and organic matter will provide excellent root zone conditions. Being able to choose what to fill the beds with also means that a much wider variety of crops can be grown. For example, in plots of alkaline earth, they can be loaded with acid soil to care for ericaceous plants such as blueberries or azalea.

In addition to looking great, the EasyBed can open up a new world of possibilities to gardeners and increase the variety of crops that can be grown. Visit everedge.co.uk to explore their range of products.
