I had a less pleasant experience yesterday. As I left a job, I saw a couple of crows along the road and it looked as though they were trying to attack a young bird on the ground. Me being me went for a closer look and as I got close, I saw what looked like a bird shielding a young one with it's wing from the crows. The crows high tailed it and when I got really close, I saw it was actually a male sparrow hawk(much smaller than the hen) and it was shielding it's catch - a pigeon. I chased it off but don't know how the pigeon got on.

I saw (and heard) a sparrow hawk catching a small bird the other day, it was horrible, but then I figured that sparrow hawks have to live too which made it seem somewhat better.
The best things in life are not things.

I'm quite partial to pigeon meat myself

A sparrowhawk brought down a parakeet in my friend's garden last year. Apparently it was a fast and no nonsense operation.
          Swift and lethal.

          Awesome things, birds of prey.

I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
