Sanglier (wild Boar) have just dug up most of my potatoes and onions in my newly cleared patch on the river (which is flooded and the water is currently lapping at my patch!)
Anybody got any tips about keeping them away apart from sitting there at night with a shotgun ....

I saw something recently saying that wild boar were becoming more and more prevalent as they have no natural predators and have "recently" been reintroduced by accident into the British countryside (New Forest being the example they used). One of the methods they were talking about was culling, or professional "management".

Have you tried your local hunters Jardiniere?

I think the season on sanglier hunting has finished so they won't be able to shoot it but they may know a thing or two about discouraging it from wrecking your plot.

I had wild boars on my land until I fixed my fences. They are very pesky and will do a lot of damage. I even suspect that they climbed my apple trees and ate the apples.

My vegetable garden is protected by a metal fence.
I have metal posts hammered in every 2 metres.
To this I have attached a wire screen about 90 cm high.

This is the same stuff they use on building sites to reinforce the concrete so it is very cheap.

Since I have had a continuous fence the wild boars and mountian goats have not entered. They don't like the spikes on top of the mesh.

I have seen a lot of wild boar damage but I have never seen one.

I suspect that they come in big family groups at night.

The previous owner of my land said he used to shoot them.
He used to attract them on purpose and sit in a tree with his gun.

I still have the big galvanised bath he used to immerse the boar in after killing it.
(it is necesary to put the corpse in hot water to get the bristles out)

Electric fence ??

I suppose they will be as stubborn as badgers?

thank you everyone - it seems the boar have eaten around the potatoes and onions so instead of them being in nice rows they are now growing in a sort of indiscriminate modern art type pattern....i dont think i'd get away with too much fencing ... my bit of land is right on the river by a lock and is expected to look pretty ish....but am considering all the options...i've not seen them on my land - when we go for walks in the hills we see them and if you drive at night over the tops you can see them scurrying for cover - dont have mountain goats thenk goodness just the odd deer......no badgers.

What a nightmare - like badgers with attitude.
That Johnny Kingdom on the telly showed wild boar, loads of them eating peanuts I think it was. Scatter some peanuts on the ground, wait up all night dressed like a bush, and shoot the b*ggers.

I have slugs.............you have boars??? I shall not complain about slugs now for a week! I once heard on one of these nature documentaries that if you spread your urine around the borders of your property, the boars do not like it and stay away......failing that my OH says can he come help with the shotgun, fancies bacon and egg for the weekend.LOL.

i might try the spreading urine idea -

Yes, Watch that the gendarmes don't see you using your hose!!! boar very strong...I'd definitely investigate electric fencing....low and not too much of an eyesore. or get Obelix round for dinner!

dont have a hose...other half has got one tho!

We had them! a real pest! We tried everything and the only thing that worked was putting a fence around 2500m2 of our land!!

Taste brilliant tho - was given some year before last - hope someone gives us some next season.....
