  • Whitefly prevention

    Hi All,

I still seem to have a great crop of allotment whitefly [on the kale mostly]. If it survives this weather so far then it seems possible to make it through to next year.

I've been taking the kale home and composting the stalks etc it has just occurred to me I don't want whitefly on my home veg or in the greenhouse - never had it at home before and it would be nice to keep it that way.

Can I compost these infested plants & leaves and will the whitefly die or will they just bed down and pop up in the spread compost next year?

What do you suggest - it seems silly not to compost but then again......

Compost them, but make sure you water your compost, otherwise the little bl££ders will fly out every time you take the lid off.

They seem to survive anything you throw at them. Have you tried soapy water or the chilli and garlic spray yet?

Repeated applications will be needed, as each generation hatches. Same with soapy water: it doesn't kill the eggs/pupa, so you need to keep doing it

I wish I knew of a way to permanently eradicate whitefly. When I bring my produce home from the lottie I drown it in a bucket of water to kill the little b*****s, but some always escape. They seem indestructible.

        Good ideas thanks.

I really like the chilli & garlic soap spray - sounds like that would sort the blackfly as well.

I use soapy spray and chilli and garlic. I also plant marigolds around my plants now, seems to deter a wide range of critters! I hate whitefly

Not if you wash the fruit before you eat it. I'm surprised you've got whitefly on your fruit bushes though: where and how are you growing them?
