| I've come to the conclusion that slugs like to eat everything. They even munched on my onions which they are apparently said to hate! I would strongly advise against slug pellets tho. They attract slugs, and even though they may kill some, there will be some that prefer to munch on your plants. Nematodes are the best bet, tiny micro-organisms that burrow into the slugs and eat them from the inside out. Not pleasant, but i works!

I think it is better that they like the leaves of your butternut squashes in comparison with those slugs in my garden, they loves the young squashes, some of the squashes has reach the size of a tennis ball or even bigger, and they still went for it, eat a bit of it and dig a hole in and in the end the squash rot. | I know what you mean about the tough leaves - my mature courgette plants have leaves which feel as if they are indestructible... but apparently the slugs and snails are rather partial. They also nibble on the courgette flowers, but an un-damaged courgette fruit is not palatable - thank goodness! |
