  • Round up

I have got a patch that was full of couch grass. So i decided that the best method was to spray it with round up ( not the shop version ) It was extra strong that the local council use .. I sprayed the plot yesterday when would be safe to use the ground for planting veg ?

    cheers jamie

Was your couch in full growth? You're supposed to spray when there's lots of leaf

I would say look on the bottle ... but you didn't get a bottle did you?

You have to allow time for the poison to be taken through the plant's system and down to the roots. It may take more than one application to kill the roots

You might get more info on here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roundup_(herbicide)

meaning it wont harm me or my kids in the veg we eat , but reading that link it doesn't sound to good . Think i would of been better not using it .

If i don't grow i don't really want to leave bare soil is there a good green manure that will stay in the ground for most of the growing season without becoiming a weed its self

My preferences (having tried most of them) are:

                - limnanthes: shallow rooted, ground cover, bee attractor
                - phacelia: ditto
                - alfalfa: good to sow in lines amongst your crops, to cut and mulch several times over about 3 years

Cant understand why roundup is allowed and ***** fluid isn't?

Anyway............roundup (gylphosate) supposedly becomes inert when it comes into contact with soil. Once its dried on the leaf, theoretically you can plant straight away.

If you haven't got a pesticide certificate you are breaking the law by using stuff designated for amenity use, and could cause untold damage to the environment.

Maybe it would be better to ask the questions before using the product.

I have to admit that we use it on the eges of our land.
We buy the stronger strength called Gallup 360 ( industrial strength) when we are in the UK

I've had a look at the instructions.
Seems in 'ideal growing conditions' -( ie late Spring,) you can plant trees within 7 days.
Edible plants?...4 days before sowing seeds!

To be honest- apart from using it on non veg areas- I'd leave it a good month to give it time to kill off the weeds- and yank out the roots and then give it a few days before planting out!

Mid April? yup- I'd go with that too ( now that you've sprayed it!)

I may sound touchy about glyphosate.............but my allotment neighbour used industrial strength stuff without realising the spray mist can cause damage to areas downwind..........i.e. my allotment. Had to buy new rhubarb this year!

I can't understand why such stuff is still available . you'd think with all the 'elf and safety rules etc it would've been banned . You're not allowed to contaminate someones air by smoking but you can contaminate their food with weedkiller ........

^ Monsanto is a very big, very powerful company. They will resist all attempts to get their products (Round Up, GM seeds) banned.

(Incidentally, if you read the Wiki link, it isn't the glypho that's the main concern: it's the other additives)

Yeah its supposed to be safe as it becomes inactive when in contact with soil. Believe that if you want but I am not totally sure about this. How many times over the years have companies/government said that products were safe to use, only to find out in later years that in fact they are not.

With that said, I feel a bit of a hypocrite as I do use it occasionally at home but only as a last resort for invasive weeds around my house and try to avoid using it around edible crops.
