Default Reasons Not To Weed

In the interest of good looks and making the place look at bit tidier for customers I spent three days hand weeding my Minicole, Hispi and Red Drumhead Cabbages. They were more or less invisible through the chickweed and oilseed rape volunteers. Looks bloody nice I thought when I finished - nice straight lines of lovely tasty cabbages - I was niot alone with these thoughts - the local pigeon population descended and I have lost somewhere in the region of 200 in one night !
Next to where I stopped weeding, my remaining Hispi, Minicile, Primo, and Derby Day are fine, hiding very effectively in the weeds - and that is where they shall stay.

What a shame Rat. I hope you've got some of those pigeons in the freezer as compensation.

I find that chickweed acts as a living mulch as well, it keeps the soil moist aroiund the plants, especially in drought conditions!

Sorry to hear about your cabbage SW..............bet I can guess whats on the menu for tonight tho.......pigeon pie per chance?

Yes, same thing with my neighbour. She finally cut down her 6 foot high parsnips, the next day all her cabbages had been eaten.

Rat, how on earth would you net all your brassicas?

I shall be having strict words with that lot, vandals the lot of them

sorry to hear about your losses, maybe you could have a competition for local schools to design a scarecrow? Something with lots of moving bits? Pigeon pie would be more satisfying though.

"People did used to eat a lot of pidgeon pie once!"

Joking apart I seem to remember that eating lots of pigeon is not good for you. May have mis-remembered of course, given my age and condition ...

Pigeon breast is nice on the barbie wrapped in bacon to keep it moist!
