Sounds like mildew. Happens often if the soil is dry and the atmosphere moist and not enough ventilation.

So you need better ventilation in the greenhouse and liberal watering to avoid the problem. A fungicide specific to mildew will solve the problem if it gets too bad.

Default Grapevine frustrations

Hi,

Also make sure you thin the fruit out, as the grapevine ages let it grow more and more fruit gradually. This is a real common problem and is frustrating but you can beat it.

Make sure that you never ever wet the vine leaves or grapes, this will help keep the mildew in check, spray reguarly with a multi purpose anti fungicide. Make sure its one for edible fruit and follow the instructions inplicitly.

Keep the vine well thin and prune vigerously in spring, make sure you get rid of all the old leaves and prunings and burn well.

Paint the bark of the vine with lime if you like.

Good luck

Hi Paul, you can get Bordeaux mixture (copper sulphate & lime) from lots of garden centres & online (see link to Organic catalogue below). I'd pick off the worst affected leaves as well for now.

I was lucky when this happened to me, The leaves got infected first but the little buds hadnt burst open yet so there in effect wasnt any fruit to get infected. The whole vine looked sick and wilted and I really thought I had lost everything for the year.

I sprayed reguarly and kept things clean and well ventilated and success, the buds burst open and the grapes developed fine. After new growth of leaves I removed the scabby ones gradually so I never left the vine bare at all.

How far on is your grapevine ?
