  • How are you all coping with the drought

Here in east anglia on the cambridge/suffolk border we have had no significant rain for quite a while. What we have had didn't even dampen down the dust. We are on very light soil that dry's quickly so things are looking glum. Still rain forecast for tomorrow though they say it may of petered out by the time it reaches us. I see Scotland is in for a rough ride with heavy rain and out of season strong winds. Good luck to you. There is a ban on using hose pipes on our site to water the ground direct but a lot of people ignore it. Very naughty as it only puts the rent up even more. Still holding back on planting out some stuff as it's so dry.

We haven't had much in the way of rain here in South Wales either although there is some forecast for tonight I believe:-) We can do with it.

When I got to the lottie yesterday there was a sign up saying no hosepipes to be used cos of the drought. We can fill up our barrels and butts but only at weekends. That's better than nothing because the soil is dust dry.

People are good on this site and don't abuse the use of hosepipes. Our rents are so cheap and they include water so we are all careful because we don't want to have to pay more for the plots.

Lez, I'm surprised your committee aren't quick to stop those on your site using hosepipes during a ban - they would be here and I suspect we would have to pay a fine too or run the risk of being asked to leave.

Not that bad in my area, we have had some rain and my water butts are full.
      Rain forecasted for tonight again.
The bad thing is that this keeps the grass growing so I need to do it today.

There is supposed to be a ban on using hose pipes and they are for filling butts only. People just ignore it as some do not have any butts on thier plots. As for the commitee well it's there in name only. Other sites have an active commitee and maybe we should push ours. There seems to be alot of apathy towards it and a who cares opinion. The council have threatened to fine/dismiss any one misusing the water but never do anything as they cannot police it all the time. Not their fault. I have a supply of butts but wonder how others would cope if the water supply were to be cut of. Half of mine are empty now though. They do not seem to encourage water saving here which suprises me as the water bill goes on our rent and we are in one of the driest areas in the country apparently.

Yes, I see what you mean, the council can't be there to see what's happening so can't fine/dismiss anyone. I agree it's not the council's fault. Pity your committee aren't more forthcoming. In any case, the people who are abusing the hosepipe ban would just go to the lottie at a time when there's no-one about and use the water then I suppose. Dare I say that they might even use water from the butts (other people's) if the water was cut off.

The site I'm on is a private one and most of the committee live almost next to the site (they can see it from their houses) so can see who is coming and going and what they're doing for that matter. It all helps in lots of ways.

Do council sites have to provide butts or other water containers? We do have to provide our own but there's always someone on the committee who can get them for us (free) if we are stuck. Especially me as the only female lottie owner on site!

Pity that hardly anyone on your site cares about using water sensibly, it must be hard for you as you obviously do care. I don't really know the answer to that, sorry.

We actually had heavy rain last night so I'm hoping the butts will have filled up a bit!

So here we are again, in a drought but even less rainfall than last year. The water companies should be giving these away, if they want us to save water: bathwater siphon pump - YouTube
