Default How much water??

Just wondered what is the average annual rainfall in the uk?
I have 10 water buts.......8 of which are free standing. Eventually I intend building a canopy over each with guttering and downcomer feeding water into the but or possibly linking them to the two that are fed from the greenhouse and shed!
Would the annual rainfall in UK fill the buts without a canopy I wonder?

Hello Snadger, there is no figure which is the annual average rainfall in the UK. It varies hugely from area to area. Where I live it is about 44" per year. I used to live in an area where it was 88" (Yuk). Some parts of Scotland get 140 " or more - double yuk !! The south of England can get 22" per year with some areas getting as little as 15" - mediterranian rainfall. You're somewhere in there Snadger ! Hope this is of some help.

Not exactly an answer to your question, Snadger, but I found this in our local news letter thingy from the Mairie and it gives an estimate of the volume of water that can be gathered from a roof.

Our area has an average rainfall of 550mm per year and the volume of water that can be salvaged from a roof 100m square is calculated thus 100 x 0.55 = 55 cubic metres of water and allowing for a 10% evaparation it leaves 49.5 cubic metres. We live in a dry area so just think of the volume that you could salvage in a wet area if you could find the space to store it .
