  • Winter salads

Does anyone have any tips for growing salad leaves through the winter? Preferably in the ground although I do have a cold greenhouse. Last time I tried to grow winter lettuce in a growbag in the greenhouse they were tough and bitter and got attacked by aphids.

    thanks

Not done it yet (see my thread on Winter Harvest) but will be experimenting
I'm planning to try in the greenhouse (in the soil in raised bed) and also under fleece and possibly mini-polytunnel
What varieties have you tried? I think some are better than others for winter?

Also other veg - asian (e.g. pak choi), mustards, winter purslane is low cropping but tasty, also spinach?

    cheers

Do you cloche them, cazsudz? I'm planning on sowing mustards, pak choi + some winter hardy lettuce, forgot the name now - similar to little gem I think.

Last year I grew 'All the year round' and 'Arctic king' lettuce in my greenhouse over winter they went in as tiny plants after the tomatoes.

Thanks _ I'll try again with lettuce and rocket and spicy mix. Did you grow your lettuce in the soil Bren or in containers or grobags?

I've got a border along one side so I grew them in that, think i only had to water them a few times.

I haven't had success with growing winter greens - still, I'm planning to try again, this time in a polytunnel, which we haven't had before.

Meantime, this is a great thread, I'll be checking it for more tips.
