Is it possible to grow lettuce on a window sil all year round?
I have a few trough pots that would fit great on there. The reason being that i have quite a few lizards that love there salad leaves and store bought is really expensive.
So i just wondered if it was possible, my purse would appreciate the help!
    Cheers xx

    Hi Voddy,

I'm new this year to growing salad leaves but I am growing mixed salad seeds which I got from lakeland with their gardening magazine.

The packet states it can be grown year round and if you go for cut and come again types you get 2/3 cuttings from each set.

I just have mine in a tray on a sunny south facing windowsil and so far they are looking good!

This is just a general mixed salad though, I'm not sure if you can grow say iceburgs etc on a windowsil like that; i'm sure some other grapes will though!

You can get winter hardy lettuces and salad leaves. Covering with a cloche or fleece can help keep temp up, but also depends on how much light you get all year round. Sometimes you can't get quite such a good harvest over winter. But you've not really got anything to loose by giving it a go, you've got plenty months left until winter yet.

You really should try to find a copy of The Window Box Allotment by Penelope Bennett (the title says it all). It's a terrific book - I read it endlessly when I had almost no growing space (if that is your situation).

I gather it's being republished next year with photographs, but the original little paperback is such a charming book, but packed with tons of good advice.

There are salad leaves that are hardier than others. Corn salad/lambs lettuce is pretty good for year round growing.
        I don't roll on Shabbos
