  • will my sweetcorn get fatter?

I'm growing sweetcorn for the first time this year - some of the cobs have all brown tassels now and feel quite fat but when I peep inside they're still the pale yellow of baby sweetcorn.
Is it just a matter of waiting or is this the best I'm going to get?

It's not so much the colour of the kernels, as the consistency of the juice in them. If you leave them too long the juice goes thick and stodgy and the corn isn't nice. Squeeze one of the kernels and if the juice is milky then they're about ready, if it's watery they need a bit longer.

Different varieties have different coloured kernels. As SarzWix says, try the thumbnail test.
