I'm wanting to try and make some large raised beds out of ton bags - just wondering if anyone knew somewhere I could blag some from or whether I'll have to resort to buying some

just try your local building site or if someone up your road is having an extension etc, the bags are usually non-return and are thrown away. I have managed to scrounge a couple before from some guys doing a brick driveway in the past.Kernow rag nevra

keep your eyes open for someone doing work on their house / garden, the bags from builders merchants don't have a deposit on them so the owner may be willing to give you them when they are finished.Comment

If you live in a rural area, or close to it, most farmers / agricultural contractors use fertiliser that comes in 1 tonne bags with a tie bottom - they would be only too pleased to get rid of someRat

You may already know, but they rot if left wet. I have one in the garden full of last years crap i didnt get round to taking to the tip and its coming apart now

Fill with soil, plant in soil...No timber scrounging needed, I love these things.
Try building companies, kat, the ones that B&Q sell full of sand are nonrefundable so get binned or Freecycled by users, and I think that is par for the course with the industry. Builders merchants are another idea, because some of the bags supplied to building sites for other things have a deposit on them, and even with some stitching going or small holes you would be able to use them.There's no point reading history if you don't use the lessons it teaches.

Same idea as previous comments. Try builders, building suppliers, or walk the streets looking for someone doing major building work, extensions and so on.
What you're looking for are those large bulk bags usually made of woven white sacking material with loops around the top so they can be lifted by cranes and fork lift trucks. They are meant to be cheap and disposable, so after a few years the plastic degrades and they are liable to burstComment
