  • When to start removing bottom tomato leaves?

As the thread title suggests when do people start removing the bottom leaves off their tomato plants?

Already started...and other odd leaves. I always do , makes easier watering and gives more air round the plants .

As soon as they yellow or discolour.

My plants are between 2 and 3 foot tall and I've started getting rid of the bottom leaves and stalks but I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing so please wait for an expert lol

Mine are about the same size as yours and thats normally when I start removing them.

I was just wondering whens the best time to start.

I may have to start tomorrow.

The ones with canes are taller so have had lower removed for easier (don't splash leaves) watering and some of leaves further up clashing with neighboring plant.
The small ones in pots , not yet.

Just to add that mine are a mixture of in the greenhouse (leaves stay dry), outside (leaves have been absolutely soaked recently) and in some leaky blowaways (leaves have been getting really quite wet)

I'm treating them all the same and they all look the same

Mine are up to 4/5 trusses and the bottom leaves will come of this week.

I've had to cut a load of mine off today as they were getting a little crowded! Grown massively this last week or so ...

Only cut them off when they get manky, found there is no benefit in randomly hacking

My theory is that if the lower leaves are in the shade they are not doing their job, so may as well be removed, plus it will aid air circulation.

Personally, I dont make any fast rule as to when to remove them. If they are yellowing or if there is a vast ammount of foliage blocking light or airflow then I will cut the leaves back or remove them.
Mine have an average of four trusses on them.

I pruned mine hard 2 days ago , they were out of control with up to 7-8 trusses and too much branching and foliage, so I literally had to prune a lots down, now they are back to having 4-5 trusses and missing a substantial amount of stems (just left the main stem in each), branches and leaves, much better. Just hope they will cope.
