    When to plant tomatoes out

    Hi,

    I've got many tomato seedlings in 3 inch pots, no flowers yet. Now do i have to wait until the start to flower before i put some into the ground in their final positions? I am also going to put some into a couple of grow bags and put them in a couple of blowaways to see if that makes a difference.

    I was all ready to plant them out this weekend but on the growbag it mentioned to wait until they flower. They are San Marzano ones if that makes a difference.

    I've never heard of that before Matt although I'm not saying it's wrong. I think they should be outside by now, unless they are really small. Make sure that they have been hardened off for at least a week before you put them out. They will sulk for a bit but should pick up very quickly especially if the sun shines

      I would have thought they would have outgrown a 3" pot by now Matt and I wouldn't wait until flowers, transplant them out now.

        Bang 'em in! I've had outdoor toms (in big pots) outside for nearly a month.

                  What does blight look like? I have three Gartenperle in pots that are not looking too wonderful. Yellowed and showing blackened edges - looks like soot. I am assuming blight and am close to throwing them. They have fruits on though. The arctic winds and rain we've had here haven't helped.

                    VVG,

                    A pic would help, but in the mean time. Blight starts as dark brown patches on the edge of the leaves, but there again so many other things can give the same appearence. Check under the leaves looking for a white mouldy fringe around the dark patches.

                    If you have had this complaint for longer than a week or so I would guess without seeing it that it may not be blight as it is very fast acting.
