  • What's your favourite bit?

Mine is definitely the sowing of seeds, and seeing them germinate.

I do enjoy the ongoing "care and maintenance" of the plants too, but sometimes it feels like a bit of a chore.

And harvesting is brilliant, except that I eat veg mostly because I know I should not because I want to - with the exception of tomato and basil salad, which I could happily live on. (and beetroot and red cabbage are good, too.)

But for me nothing beats the initial thrill of seeing those first signs of life.

    What does it for you?

Seeing the bean sticks up, suddenly my little plot is a vegetable patch not just bare earth! Guess what I did today

Mind you I do like eating the result too

Me too! Me too! - Except I also love my porridge.
I've loved every bit of work I've done on my lottie so far. Even the aching back at the end of a long day digging. It signals the fact that another bit of ground is ready for planting. Woohoo!!

All of it's great but I have to agree, seeing the seedlings come through the compost never fails to set my heart alight!

All of it. The excitement & anticipation of seeds germinating. The ongoing care & maintenance. Harvesting & eating it with the smug satisfaction that I grew it.

I agree, there's nothing more satisfying than being able to eat something you've grown yourself

I love sowing. And planting out.

I hate pricking out, hardening off, and watering.

I love seeing the babies poke their heads above the soil - the most exciting bit for sure! And I love digging. And I love planting things out into their final position. And I love seeing the first flowers, the first sign of veg, watching it grow. I love weeding. I love harvesting, I love digging up spuds, I love peeling back the sweetcorn leaves to see what the cob looks like. I love eating it, especially if someone else has cooked it. I love boring my friends rigid with "tales from the allotment", and showing off about what I have grown!! And best of all I love sitting down with my little one, surveying a good couple of hours work, and eating something raw that we have just picked.

I don't like waiting for germination, I don't like pricking out or potting on, I don't like finding stuff damaged / eaten / dead after something's been at it, unfortunately nor do I like the hours spent picking off blackfly or caterpillars, I don't like watering (except new transplants), I don't like forgetting to harvest the broccoli and seeing it bolt before my very eyes.
(Fortunately, most of the above is optional )
Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.
