Default What squash to grow?... Decisions decisions

Anyone offer a little advice on what squash is best suited for me?

I am looking for a small/medium fruit. (About grapefruit size)

I have limited space in my garden now - and my hubby has warned me about buying more plants.

Are there any that would take up less room than a butternut squash? I've never tried to grow squash before so unfortunatly this area is not my forte. Any advise appreciated!

    Hi there!
I found Premier Seeds on e-bay sold quite a variety of squash seeds, including ones which need smaller space, I found one which is quite a small round green one, about cricket ball sized. Last year I had lots of luck with my butternut, I planted near my manure pile and it just loved it!! I let it grow wild all over the place but you can keep them tied in a 'circle' with pegs to take up less space. Wilkinsons are also doing a variety pack, think there are 6 in for a few quid. Good luck!

Look on the packet's blurb and try to buy one with a bush rather than a trailing habit.

Victoria, I think I have a couple of spare Golden Nugget and Sweet Dumpling seeds I could spare you - both are Grapefruit size. Google them and if they take your fancy give me a shout - both are bush varieties I believe.

Thanks for the advice Eden I'll look them up on eBay. Also gonna look into "pegging the butternut in a circle". Sounds like a great idea as I've not got the space for it to go wild. wish I did tho!

Well I'm not really fussy. Really looking for something compact and easy growing. I move to the South of England on Monday so no doubt what grew well in Glasgow or Yorkshire wont grow so well down there.

Time will tell - but i'll keep everyone posted on the move and the upcoming garden excavation! Lol!

Good luck with the move on Monday! Have you got a lot of work to do in your new garden?
