  • What should I store my potatoes in?

    What's the best storage please?

  • #2
What varieties of potato are you growing? At this time of year you don't normally lift potatoes to store, just lift them as needed and eat them fresh. Maincrop potatoes won't be lifted till much later in the year, and they need to be dried off briefly to set the skins. They are usually stored in hessian sacks.

I use a paper sack the sort farmers sell their potatoes in.

This time of year I only lift as many as I need until I get to the plot again so usually eat some straight away and store the others in paper bags in the veg rack. Don't need much storage as not storing many. My main crops are cured in the light for a few hours and then stored (when dry) in hessian sacks in the garage - need to be frost free and checked now and again for any off ones which will spread to the others.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I am pre-empting the lifting of my main crop. As I have an allotment now I will have enough to store, whereas previously only grown at home and had enough to eat when lifted. I've not had to think about storage before.

As Alison said then. Lift on a dry day, leave on the soil surface to dry out for a few hours, and then store in hessian sacks or the papery sacks that potato suppliers tend to use now. Which varieties are you growing?

Do you have a local fruit and veg market? Try asking the stall holders - they are usually happy to give away sacks, onion nets etc.

Fabric shops sell hessian ... if you can't sew, you could just staple them into bag shapes. Or you can buy them on eBay, as you can most things

Fab idea, we have a farmers market every fortnight so I'll mosey on up there and see what they have, otherwise I'll try the ebay route, thanks two_sheds.

but dont store them for toooooo long. My OH decided to cut down on potato eating so kilos of my potatoes started to sprout before we could eat them all......this year I'm only growing Charlottes and we will eat them all by the end of the summer.

I tend to only grow earlies in bags and this year some in the ground, so they'll all be eaten anyway! Hope you have some luck finding bags.

My local greengrocer gives them away along with onion bags and those cardboard trays with inserts that apples come in.

I grow Desiree and once the foliage dies back I cut it off to above ground, leave the tubers for two weeks to set skins, then haul up and store in double wall paper bags or hessian sacks - both available to buy at garden centre chains.
