    what to plant after potatoes?

    what can I plant when my spuds are all out of the ground? - 3-4 months I should think by looking at them now.

    I guess I should be thinking about raising some seeds, but have no idea what! any ideas? - bearing in mind that we don't like cabbage much and have a limited appetite for brussel sprouts...

    I'd put in LEEKS. You can still sow the seed now in trays or pots and transplant them in due course after the spuds are up.

      So around September/October, you are really looking to plant for next year then, Jap onions, Garlic, early Peas erm Broad Beans, summer Caulis.

            LEEKS - love em!
            onions and garlic I wasnt going to bother with coz felt they took a lot of space last year and didnt taste significantly better than shop-bought (unless someone can tell me otherwise!)
            early peas is an idea...

              Hi all,

              First post, so hope you are more gentle than the badger who had my sweetcorn last year....

              I was wondering whether the suggestion for leeks after spuds applies to the space left by first earlies - I've got a small bed full of these that we will be working through shortly and so it will be empty around July.

                Welcome to the grapevine!
                Ideal place for them I reckon. Make sure you go over the bed very thoroughly with a fork to remove any little spuds you missed (I always find a few) or they'll be through next year.
                Are you still growing sweetcorn - or have you gone off feeding badgers?

                    If you're growing earlies, then put in leeks, or a further planting of french beans. Quick growing salad crops could also go in, or winter brassicas.

                      Many thanks for the replies - most useful. We eat a lot of french beans so they will do nicely.

                      And yes, I do have sweetcorn in again this year - the badgers will have to negotiate a few more obsticles this year if they want my ones!!

                        Yeah, badgers love sweetcorn. Distract them with peanut butter sandwiches.
                        Last year rats stole my sweetcorn...I found the husks under my shed when i dismantled it. Unless it was very very short badgers

                            A muskrat. Having said that, I've no idea what it is either! Some American garden pest no doubt!
