  • What have I found in my cabbage?

    HI,

I am having problems with cabbage moth but I found something else. When I inspected my Hispi cabbages I found a fat, white slug-like 'thing' about 1cm long in the heart. It was really slimy and had eaten the heart out. Any ideas please?

I try to be as organic as I can by picking off eggs and caterpillars but my pristine cabbages (Offingham Flower of Spring and Hispi F1) are being destroyed and I'm close to resorting to chemical warfare.

    Best Wishes,
    Brendan

Def sounds like slugs, brought a pointed cabbage home the other day sliced through it it was like a swiss roll of cabbage with a filling of slugs next slice was just the same

Hi, Bmac, welcome to the forum. Slugs and snails come in assorted sizes, even the baby ones can do a lot of damage ( rules of the jungle)

Thank you, I suspected it was some sort of slug but it had to be the most revolting I've ever seen. Your suggestions are quite heartening because I was scared that I had an infestation of some terrible creature that would decimate my crops in days. So, it's eyes alert as usual.

          Thanks again,
          Brendan

I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
