Hi Just a quick question, I am going to grow tomatos, cucumbers, courgetts in grow bags, do you slice your grow bags to give them some drainage or is it better not to.

I take the contents out and grow them in buckets and large pots..if I didn't have those I'd bend them in half, chop them across the middle making 2 deep bags, pop some holes in the bottom and put them into trays so that I can water them from the bottom up.

No don't cut the bag. The idea is that it holds the moisture you don't want it draining out! You'll find there are already tiny perforations in the sides anyway.
I just follow the instructions on the bag i.e. lay flat and cut either two or three openings for you plants. It works great and I've done really well with cucumbers and tomatoes for the last three years.Comment

I planted out tomatoes, cucumbers and french beans in some grow bags this weekend. I got some pots from wilko's, I put the grow bag flat on the ground and pushed two pots into each one. I filled the pots with the contents of a third growbag and planted the plants into the pots.

All my other veg is in pots filled with the contents of growbags. I have gone through about 15 growbags now.Comment

Are the bottoms still in the pots? If they are, I can't see it being more than a pot support.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

nope, I cut the bottom out of the pots so the roots could grown down through the pot into the growbag (the pot is not pushed all the way into the bag). I got the idea from someone else on here.Originally posted by Flummery View PostComment

Ah well, that's good. I've found growbags go flat in use and they're much better with the pot in. OR - this year I'm putting some in old fish boxes so they will keep them in shape.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

I do like Zazen and take the compost out and put it in buckets and pots.
I find it hard to judge watering and everything else in growbags/

i use them in the fruit crates you get at the fruit shop for free, just split the bag open and use it as a liner. i like it as its moveable and shorter/ deeper shape than the floppy bag.Comment

Up to now I have been using the contents in pots and containers. However when I put my toms outside I plant to sink bottomless pots into the grow bag just like Funstuie has done.Comment

I cut mine across the middle and stand them up on their ends, with a few drainage holes in the bottom, this way they have a nice deep root run. Works a treat, last year my Toms were up to the greenhouse roof and healthy as anything.Nestled somewhere in the Cambridgeshire Fens.
