I planted my spuds Three weeks ago. After consulting my Gardening Guru (Dad) he said that I'd better get them covered up at nights before the plants break surface because the frost will kill them.
Off to get some polythene sheeting i went, and using alkathene piping i set about making a home made Crotch for them. All was going well, i uncovered and watered them in the mornings then watered and covered them up again at night.
I had a nice bit of foliage on top of the mounds and was feeling pretty pleased at the prospects of having a decent crop should they survive the pests. I went out this morning to uncover them and the frost had killed them through the polythene.
Just Typical.
Being a novice though, i suppose this is how you learn and all is not lost because i only planted out half of my seed potatoes, so up the dead ones will come and in the chitted ones will go. I think i'll let them chit for a few more weeks before planting them though.
I can't remember the species but they were first earlies, just not as early as I would have liked. Darned frost!
