  • Weed free onion planting?

I've got over-wintering onions, shallots and garlic to plant, but my beds are just full of weeds ATM

Obviously I'll clear them before we plant, but is there something I can do, except for constant weeding over winter, to stop my weeds?

I've planted leeks through damp newspaper before, and was wondering if there was something similar that could be done in this case?

I just hoe between the rows; that doesn't take too much time really and there isn't much else to do on the plot in the winter anyway. I look on it as therapeutic and it's not that much of a chore.

You normally getr very little weed growth through the winter period anyway! A lot of the blokes at the allotments lay membrane with holes cut in at the correct spacing for there spring planted onion sets, spose you could give that a go. It can be stored after the harvest and used every year!
