  • Veg patch having a last gasp before autumn?

I went in to the veg patch a couple of days ago to pick herbs for a friend, and it seemed as though it was having a bit of a burst of activity after a little lull recently. Has anyone else had the same thing?

One of DD's marrow plants has produced a new lovely young fruit which is doing very nicely, and the others all have lovely open flowers. The courgette plants are brewing several lovely courgettes, the runner beans have gone mad again overnight, the purslane is starting to run away with itself, the mustard greens are doing brilliantly and the lettuces have begun to put on a real spurt (but not bolting). The carrots seem to be ready (though I'm always really cautious about picking them as have pulled up so many tiddlers over the years) and the toms, though many are still green (I bring a few at a time into the house to ripen), are still looking very healthy and doing their stuff.

Has anyone else's plot suddenly burst into life again?
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

Yes, my allotment has put on a spurt (apart from the brassicas which have been munched by caterpillars). I put it down to the recent rain - we've had hardly any all Summer.

Same here, thought I wasn't going to get any more courgettes and stumbled upon a couple of almost marrows and several decent size courgettes after a few days of not looking.

Got french beans coming as well.

Don't mention the slugs rustylady, a few of them are going to be dispatched tonight. Grr.
While wearing your night clothes, plant cucumbers on the 1st May before the sun comes up, and they will not be attacked by bugs.

        Yep me too...
Previously munched cabbages are getting great hearts on them now..
Lettuces flying again after seeming to slow down...
Carrots, turnips and beetroot flying too...
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

Finally my runners are running .....cabbage are hearting ....the foliage on my maincrop tatties is pretty much died down now so not so worried about having to chop them down prematurely if blight strikes..toms and chillies have finally decided to ripen . I won't be able to get to the lottie now till Mon or tues so hoping for a huge amount of harvesting to do...

Same here with runner beans, the cabbages have perked up and the kale seems to have doubled in size in a week. The one Tuscan kale plant I didn't have room for under the netting has been a six inch skeleton in the flower bed all summer and now has five healthy long new leaves - a sign the caterpillars have gone at last!

            Endless wonder.
