unhappy marmande tomato - help!

    unhappy marmande tomato - help!

    just noticed that my marmande is unhappy, it was a tad unhappy yesterday, now it appears to be very sad indeed
    it's wilting and has gone brown at the bottom of the stem
    what should i do?! rip it out so it doesn't spread?

    Jimbo, have you overwatered it? I did this last year to my cucumber and it looked like this. I eventually carefully scraped off the top layer of wet compost and added some dry and didn't water for a while and it picked up. I also increased the drainage holes because i had mine in bags.
    If it isn't this then i expect somebody else will put us both right!

      Have you drowned it? It's VERY hard to get the watering right in growbags (I find).
      Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

        i don't think so!
        just been out and stuck my finger to the bottom of the bag
        it's damp but not wet
        and wouldn't all the other tomatoes in the bag be equally suffering if i'd overwatered
        i had a little squeeze of the brown bit and if feels hollow
        thanks for your thoughts though!

          just googled hollow stem tomato and saw this sclerotonia disease thingummy
          does this happen in the UK?
          the plants came from a garden centre, probably not a very good one!

            Dunno. Never heard of it - or experienced brown rot on stems either. I usually raise all my own toms. It's been a while since I bought one - tell a lie - I bought a Brandywine plant last year because I knew I could save the seeds!

            Strange if it's the only one though?

              Ah Flum! A girl after my own heart! I got a plant of black cherry this year , I use the side shoots as extra plants! I'll collect some seeds later!

                  well i just had a good luck and ripped her out, the stem had gone woody and hollow, am guessing that she was done and not messed around to see if it's catching, especially seen as though yes i grew most of mine from seed, and have nurtured them for far too long for them to fall fowl of mystery woody hollow stem syndrome
