Is it too late to plant Jap onion sets ?

    Is it too late to plant Jap onion sets ?

    We've only just taken on our lottie and until now have been clearing it of weeds and couch grass (last 5' will be cleared on Saturday am ).

    So now the plot is clear we really want to plant something. We've got garlic in pots ready to be planted out in spring and have orederd raspberry canes. But I've just seen Jap Onion sets on offer in a local shop 49p for 250g. Is it too late to plant them or is it worth a go ??

    I may be wrong but I think the garlic could go out now. Apparently it needs the frost to make the cloves separate

      I would say deffo give it a go if you have land available! I planted two lots of japs.....the first are maybe 6 inches tall but the second lot have hardly started to root and have no green showing yet.........in fact I have to keep replacing bulbs that the birds have pulled out!

      At that price what have you got to lose? If it doesn't work out you'll still have greenery similar to spring onions for salads!

        I planted some recently and they are growing lovely. I asked in the garden centre when I should plant them and they said Nov-Jan. They are still selling them loose in the centre too. I might put some more in, although I think the weather is less harsh in cornwall than it is where you are. Good Luck...

          Well worth a go but try and pick a mild spell to plant them. Garlic can also go out but harden it off first if it has been in the greenhouse.

            Thanks guys I think at 49p a bag I'll give 'em a try.

            The garlic is only in pots because we wanted to plant them but hadn't cleared the plot yet. As soon as we've marked you the beds I may stick them out.
