  • Tomatoes - side shoots?

Hi can I just double check if any of here are side shoots? They all have tomatoes growing on so ideally I don't want to lose them but if needs must...hard to get a good picture if it's not clear I can try again

What type/variety of tom are they? If they're bush you can leave them.
You need a photo of the "armpit" where the leaf joins the main stem to see what's happening.

Borghese? I can't find the packet now I think it's corden type. I've attached a better picture I think the main stem might be heading towards the right that's why I want to double check but the one that would be in the middle is also starting to produce tiny flower shoots

I'd guess its a side shoot but quite well developed. I sometimes leave a sideshoot to develop, to get extra fruit but you may need to support it and not let it develop any side shoots of its own!

As far as I can see on the Web, Principe Borghese are determinate, meaning no pinching out is required (in theory). In any event, this looks more like a fork than a sideshoot to me, and as it is very well developed, I'd leave it. I never find 'forks' easy to deal with unless I catch them very early. I tend to just tie them in and hope it doesn't happen too often.

Looking at your second photo, you seem to have pinched out at least one sideshoot at the leaf joint on the left below your hand. So that's good.

Yep - borghese's are destined to take over the world - mine were enormous too. Amazing fruit though - I slow roasted mine and they were perfect

Ooh I'm looking forward to them now. How big a pot should they be in then if they're to get really big? I had been pinching out the shoots, just with the bad weather and busy schedule I forgot to keep an eye on them.
Vixylix- that's my plan with these ones, was hoping to roast them

I only grow tomatoes in the ground, so I can't advise you on the size of pot you need. But I have to say thanks for starting this thread. They sound delicious, so I'll give them a go next year.

Mine were just in a 10 litre MFB and they were fine - I don't know if they would have performed better in a bigger pot though?!

I grew a couple in the GH border then a spare one in a 10 litre flower bucket and I didn't really see much difference in size or crop. They were really good tomatoes for oven roasting. not grown them this year as they took up a lot of space so I've got back to my usual San marzano.

I have Mountain Magic and they put out massive side shoots from the middle of the leaves as well as from the joint between the leaf and stem. Never seen this before.

Mine did this last year - Mountain Magic seem to be really strong growers with sideshoots everywhere.

I like San marzano they're a good size sort of droop shaped and they don't have many seeds, so good for roasting and making sauces.
