    Hi cookygirl.

I'm afraid I have no experience growing tomatoes in hanging baskets but I know it depends on the variety you grow. Which varieties were you leaning towards?

I'm sure someone knowledgeable will be along to answer you shortly.

Welcome to the vine. I'm sure you'll like it here - people are lovely.

Also, if you put your location in your profile it will show in the top right hand corner of your posts and people will be able to advise you based on your climate. (Just general location will do - it doesn't have to be too specific)

Hi Cookygirl, welcome to the Vine

I've grown 100's & 1000's in hanging baskets the past couple of years and they've done really well, 3 plants to a basket.

Also, here's a link to an article you may find of interest.

          Hi cookygirl
          I'm a newbie here too.
I have grown Tumbler (Red) in baskets for the last 3 years with incredible results.
          I put 2 to a basket with a marigold.
Remember the watering is crucial & feed twice weekly.
          I use tomorite.
          Good luck

                  Hi
I was looking for garage roof allotment pics & in the foreground saw the basket with Tumbler.
                  Posting the pic.

Agree with 2 sheds about that tom found it tasteless.

I have tried several varieties in hanging baskets over the last 15 plus years and have settled on tumbler. Not tumbler tom I hasten to add.

Mine are on a south facing wall 1 plant per basket, never let them dry out and when they are in fruit feed, feed and feed again.

Definitely agree about the watering. Every day at least. I didn't do this one year, and paid the price!

I put tea bags inside my baskets, to keep the moisture in.

Hoking through my seed box, I've got two trailing tomato types - Tumbling Tom Yellow and Garden Pearl (oh dear, will I be disappointed by these?), well hopefully they'll be at least as nice as supermarket varieties if not better. Not much space in my garden so there will be hanging baskets everywhere, full of tomates, one plant to a basket with a marigold or nasturtium plant in there too.

I've grown Maskotka (or something like that anyway) for the past few years in hanging baskets, two per basket (I find more than than just makes it too crowded and doesn't increase yields) and they've been by far the best tasting tumbling ones I've grown, much better than the others in my oppinion and fruiting from May until November in the polytunnel last year - honestly, it was amazing!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

                              Gayle,

I tried both those varieties and was disappointed with the taste, but that is my taste not everyone else's. I really think the only way to find out if you like a particular variety is to grow it and try.
