Just an observation really, I have a large tray of toms ripening in the GH and have noticed that the ones at the bottom are ripening faster than those on the top of the pile. I supposed it confirms the theory about putting them in drawers to ripen as they appear to ripen quicker in the dark. Would this be right?

as ripening is triggered by ethylene gas which is heavier than air this could be the reason why the bottom ones are rirening first?
keeping them in a closed drawer also may keep the ethylene around for longer
OR...............I could just be talking rubbish?don't be afraid to innovate and try new things

Not sure Zaz, all of the plants were picked at the same time as the plants themselves were looking worn out. I stick a banana with my unripe tomatoes for the same reason BM. The ethylene gas which the banana gives of helps to ripen the tomato meaning...I don't have to make as much green tomato chutney
