  • Tomato Vanessa

    For the first time this year I have grown the tomato Vanessa in the greenhouse. Good size fruits, cropping well and looks nice. But.... it doesn't taste good and is very fleshy to the point of being a horrible texture in the mouth. It's not just me no-one in the family likes it. I think it might be ok for cooking but that wasn't my intention. Don't think it's my growing routine as the others (Tigerella and Gardener's Delight) are good. Anyone else grow Vanessa? Don't know whether to try again next year.

    Ive had toms go like this before (with grainy/floury flesh), i think it may be down to too much water but im unsure

      That's exactly the texture. I gave some plants to my neighbour so am waiting to see how hers fared but I've a feeling I won't find out as they've only just been potted on from the 3.5" pots I gave them to her in way back in June!
      I must admit I don't tend to overwater- under if anything.

        are they a plum tom? - as it was when i grew roma (a plum tom) a few years ago that i had this problem

          This doesn't help Wendy but everything I have read says it has an excellent flavour. Are companies allowed to lie about that? I wouldn't have thought so.

              Is it the weather, specifically the lack of sun? The first Salt Spring tomato that I ate this year was rather dry and woolly but the second and third ones were full of flavour and very good to eat.

                No not a plum tomato and yes I picked them for flavour. I did wonder whether lack of sun etc would have an effect, but I have let them get fully ripe before picking. I've also got Tigerella and Gardener's Delight and they are fine. I wondered whether I had been duped by seed catalogue.

                  I think it's just been a really dodgy year Wendy. A few of my plants have yet to have a single tomato turn red and some of the toms from other plants have not been up to their usual standard of tastiness.

                    Perhaps I'll give them another go next year as I've some seed left. There's always next year.

                      Got Vanessa in my polytunnel in the sunny Loire Valley - not bad, but still not as good as Coeur de Bouef
