  • Tomato help needed...

I have tomato plants and sweet chillies in a trough in a green house. It gets sun 6hr a day. how many times do I water and when do I use tomato feed

It's important to maintain consistent watering otherwise blossom end rot will result. At least once a day when they are fruiting but now it may be sufficient to regularly check that the compost is damp. They should be fed once a week when they start to flower.

Tomatoes need lots of water - soil should ideally be moist all the time, sweet peppers less so maybe even every other day, chilli peppers can go for days without water. It's a similar story for feed: tomatoes as instructed on packaging, sweet peppers - every other time, chillis... I guess it depends how big they are but probably every third tomato feeding.

I'd add a caveat to that, and say "when they're fruiting".

Trying to keep the soil moist when they're seedlings is likely to lead to overwatering and rotting of the roots

It's easy to gauge water needs if you have a saucer under your plants, even your adult plants. Just keep topping up the saucer until it no longer empties

Did you make drainage holes in the trough?

RL's right to ask you that Greenlad - if the drainage isn't sufficient, they'll get waterlogged. I'm surprised RL didn't ask you to put your location in your profile so we know whereabouts in the country you are
