i've just been weeding, and i had a close look at my turnips ...... they all have a turnip about an inch wide ....... i'm so excited that i may have to pull 2 up and eat them with tea ....... can't wait to see darling son's face when i stick the smallest turnip in the world in front of him

on the down side, i just pulled up half my leeks (that will be 3 of them then) cos i thought they were grass but i noticed and replanted them, but no doubt they will die now.

i also seem to have killed my peas, they were along the back fence with the potatoes, but they were getting crowded so i put them in the front garden and the ones that arent dead yet don't look very healthy but i planted loads more so hopefully they will be ok

i also planted about 20 beans, and currently have a total of erm ..... 2 sickly looking bean plants ...... guess i won't be getting beans this year then.

my potato plants are massive, and are just starting to get flowers, so i'm still not ruling out the possibility of getting a few potatoes too

it's good this gardening stuff innit

my melons are fine, and even though they still aren't very big ....... butttttt ..... whilst weeding, i noticed they are getting flowers so maybe i'll get big ones after all

rob laughed when i presented him with his 'tea' ...... 2 lettuce leaves and a turnip ok so they still had their leaves on and erm were still covered in soil, but honestly kids can be soooooooooo ungrateful at times ..... i'd have cooked them, but by the time i'd have peeled them and cut the bits off there wouldn't have been anything left ...... but i like raw turnip, it was yum

When I was a kid walking home from school in the country, we used to pinch the turnips/swedes from the fields (grown in those days for the sheep) and smacked them on the gate of the fields until they were skinned and then eat them. Tasted much better in those days than the ones you get from the Supermarket these days!!

no need to peel young turnips before cooking....

sheep swede called snaggers up here...beautiful .. lol

its a great feeling isnt it! well done you and i hope you turnips grow huge, as well as the rest of your veg as well, my son would never have been impressed by the lettuce, let alone the turnip, but he is only 7! lol

That's brill Lynda It doesn't wear off either - I still get all excited with the first of each thing, but so far, especially the first potatoes, carrots, beans & strawberries. And the whole family is really excited about Sam's first pumpkin

Your leeks could be ok - they're quite happy to be transplanted & have their roots trimmed! Water em if it doesn't rain (hahahaha) and I bet they're fine!

Peas, heigh ho, you win some, you lose some. You should get some off the new plants if the older ones kark it.

Beans, try sowing some into flower buckets, they grow pretty quick and you can move them onto a sunny windowsill indoors if we get an early frost.

You should almost certainly get some spuds if they're flowering now, if they're an early variety they'll probably be ready soon (week or two)

actually it's been sunny for 7 days now, so i dunno wot you're laughing at lol ..... does it make a difference that the leeks have been in 6 weeks, and they still look like blades of grass?

will try one last time with the pot and the beans ....... i was hoping to get a magic beanstalk

dunno what variety the spuds are ........ they are from a placcy bag from the corner shop ...... they tasted like potatoes when i bought them

Aw, bless yer little swede-growing socks! I pulled up a parsnip too early the other week and planted it in spare compost. Thankfully some small leaves grew and I'm hoping for a monster parsnip!!!!! Good luck with your round 'nips! Oo er!

lol, you can tell those of us that haven't been at it long, we replant accidental uprootings, them that have been at it years, no doubt have enough, without having to replant them lol (either that, or they don't pull them up in the first place
