  • Thinning seedlings for root veg

This year I want to try minimal thinning of my root veg and let everything squish together in clumps to fit a bit more in and make it look abit more natural, has anyone tried this? What veg do you think it would work best with?

If you clumped together carrots or parsnips they would just grow skinner than normal because there wasn't enough room for them to fill out. However I know beetroot likes growing in clumps and you do get bigger roots on them when they are grown like this.

My carrots tend to grow in clumps, because I'm a bit careless when I sow them. I thin them by pulling out the fattest and eat it - then let the others grow on

Parsnips I sow thinly to begin with - one chitted seed per 6 inches of soil

Spring onions can be grown in clumps. I sow a sprinkle in a 4 inch pot and just plant out the clump when big enough. They push each other apart and you dot the clumps about anywhere on the plot.

I do this every year with carrots. Harvest some baby ones (delish) and leave the others to grow bigger.
