  • Taste Thread - Potato Varieties

As I am growing many different varieties of potato this year I thought I would post my thoughts on taste, adding any notes on yield/problems in this year's weather. What have you grown that you've thought mmmm I'll grow that again.

Yukon Gold - poor taste, dreadful yield - not one I will grow again in my soil
Red Duke of York - great taste but poor yield this year in my soil, had a great yield last year
Shetland black - boiled down to nothing so difficult to determine taste, yield good and size good despite the weather - undecided

I'm growing Pentland javelin they tasted a bit waxy but in a nice way but the yield wasn't too good though.
    Location....East Midlands.

I tried Lady Christl this year and they are gorgeous, plus the yield was better than Pentland Javelin, which I've always grown before.

I'll be sticking with the LCs from now on

Amorosa - good yield, fantastic size [put in mid march, started to harvest this week, some big enough for jackets], they make fabulous roasties, chips and the best thing - no slug damage. If I get 1 in 100 with slug damage, it's been a bad year.

My worst ever - was Sarpo Mira - horrid mealy things they were.

          First earlies I grew:

Ulster Classic - my favourite of the lot, good yield, moist not floury and only needed minimal cooking... so delicious I ate about six in a sitting (my normal intake is 1 or 2)

Accent - too floury for my taste and yield not great

Whitchill - again very floury but the yield was brilliant. My dinner guests really liked them so perhaps they are good for people who like floury potatoes... or mash

Amorosa - ditto on size, not a great yield for me though this year on any variety it would seem. Taste don't know yet. One for next year's list though!

Sarpo's make fantastic roasties. Takes a bit of practice to get good mash from them though.

Lady Cristl have been pants for me this year, the plants are dying off now and we've had 2 small potatoes per plant

                      I've tried two first earlies........
Rocket........Grown in trenches .Not a particularly high yield this year but have had some good size. Waxy and are good for boiling and also cold . We've grown these before and will grow again.
Pentland Javelin ......grown in nodig bed with straw. Not actually furtled any out yet .Will report back when tested.......

Interesting how people get different results from the same variety. Lady Christl is tops for taste in my growing conditions but yields have been disappointing this year, averaging just over one pound per seed. Yukon Gold is giving good yields but taste is nothing to write home about and there is some slug damage. Novella is a nice salad potato and is also giving good yields considering the poor weather. More varieties to lift yet so a bit early for comment.

would it be a bit to much to ask about soil type as well, im growing maris pipers in a clay soil this yr on a plot i know had leeks in before

I know this yr has been poor for yeilds, will be an interesting read this as it will influance my choice next yr

Is this thread intended to be about new varieties of potatoes, or varieties of new potatoes? I can't figure it out from the subject.

It's for you to rate the taste, size and yield of each variety you have grown this year, as you harvest and eat it. Quite simple really. Just your opinion.
