How do I know when my sweetcorn is ready to harvest

  • #2
The tassles turn chocolatey brown and if you peel the husk back a bit and squish a kernel the juice should be creamy. If they are ready, get the water boiling before you pick the corn if you can. Apparently the more quickly you cook them the better they are.

Enjoy, I have yet to harvest a corn cob (mind you only my second year of trying)

Sorry to jump in on this thread, only my second time of growing it also as I don't really like the stuff. Last time was years ago and a total failure - didn't care about it so left it to it's own devices. Anyway, just wanted to say that all of a sudden mine's gone mad, tassles all over th place and a real growth spurt. May be able to try my own before the end of the season after all. Anybody any idea how long it takes for the cobs to actually form and ripen (if that's the right term for corn!)

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

As Shirl said, once the tassels turn brown and dry your corn should be ready. However, having said that I'm growing Minipop this year and I understand this should be harvested much earlier. Anyone had any experience of Minipop?

We've been harvesting our Minipop for a few weeks now.

They are ready to pick once the tassels are full length - just break off the cob as you would a normal corn, unwrap and you should have a perfectly formed mini cob.

On our tallest ones, we've so far picked about 4, and after picking any lower down joints start to form new cobs, so i think we should get another 2 off of them. Some of the smaller ones will have less. Our tallest Minipop is about 5ft high, our smallest about 2ft.

Angiebacardi - it depends on when you planted them. Our Minipop went into the ground around May time, and then a few weeks later we planted some other baby corns. The Minipop, as i've said have been harvested over the last few weeks, the other baby corns, they are only just starting to produce the male flowers and cob bulges, so will probably take about another 2-3weeks before we can harvest them.

Thanks for that I don't think mine is quite ready yet, as the end bit is only a little brown and mostly green

It is my first year growing it and I am really pleased with the results, I can't wait to eat it, I love corn on the cob with loads of butter

I'm growing early extra sweet sweetcorn. All seemed to be going well, then I went away for a few days last week--literally just 4 days--and when I came back all the tassles had just vanished and there were slaters in the ends of the cobs where the tassles had been.

It has been really really wet, and the tassles weren't at all brown when I left. I think it rained pretty much every day when I was away. What happened? Have they rotted or something? Or did I miss the right time to harvest?

When you discover that rats have robbed it and are eating it under your shed ...I didn't discover this until I took down my shed and found lots of sweetcorn husks underneath the floor.

This year I grown my first ever baby corn, it went all fine, I planted them on early of march and around mid june I start to harvest them but one day we went for a week holiday, coming home, they were big corn ( now I have loads of them, they seems to be suitable for polenta or popcorn ).
I just want to remind you how fast they can be when the weather is optimum. So keep an eye on them, once they show brown tassel, have it check ( if they produce milky juice when press, they are ready ).

                      Cheers,

                        Two Sheds -

Slaters must be a Scots term! I'd forgotten they were also called woodlice. But does that mean I'm too late and my corn is not worth harvesting now?

When the Tassles have turned Chololate brown open on of the cobs and squeeze one of the kernals itll it pops

If the liquid is water you need to wait so cover up the corn again
If the liquid is milky it is read
If the liguid is waxie it too late and will taste like plaster.

Remember walk to the corn and run to the pan with it. the longer you leave it before cookeing the more it will loose its taste and become hard.

Corn need to be planted in blocks and you should not mix supasweet types with other types.

I pick my first 6 tonight and it was great.

Well I have checked today and the tassels look brown so tomorrow I am going to find a stool and have a look and see if they are ready inside

They are over 6ft and I am only a shorty

The cobs are not at the top of the corn they grow out of the side about 3 foot from the ground.
